At Otsego High School, students are helping build a stronger future for young readers through Pages with Purpose, a student-led club dedicated to supporting literacy across the district.

Founded by now junior Emma Hiestand, the club partners with elementary classrooms, currently focusing on Washington Street Elementary, where high school volunteers read with students and assist with literacy activities. From spelling and grammar practice to writing exercises and one-on-one reading support, high schoolers work to help younger students develop confidence and find joy in reading and writing.

The idea for the club grew from Emma’s belief that every child deserves the opportunity to experience the benefits of literature. While some students naturally develop a love of reading, Pages with Purpose aims to ensure all learners receive encouragement and support as they build their reading skills.

The impact is bigger than Washington Street Elementary School. High school volunteers grow their experience in leadership, communication, patience, and creativity while working directly with children. In addition to building those skills, it’s giving classroom experience and exposure to students who may be interested in pursuing a career in education. 

To track their success, volunteers fill out a “reflection form” following each session with and elementary student. Emma shared with us that one of her favorite stories from these reflections was a student literally “jumping for joy” after finally learning a word that had been challenging them. 

Looking ahead, the club hopes to expand its reach to additional elementary schools and kids’ programs throughout Otsego Public Schools.
