Guthrie Receives Cyndi Trobeck Community Service Award

Her dedication to Otsego students, families and the community earned Food Service Coordinator, Julie Guthrie, the honor of receiving the Cyndi Trobeck Community Service Award.

Otsego Public Schools’ Food Service Coordinator, Julie Guthrie, was honored for her service to our community with a very special award. The City of Otsego presented her with the Cyndi Trobeck Award of Service on Monday, October 7, 2024 at their City Commission meeting. “I am so proud and surprised to receive this award,” Guthrie said. “I know that Cyndi made a huge impact on our community with her giving nature. It is an honor to even be considered.”

This award honors former Mayor Cyndi Trobeck who passed away in 2022 and is given to someone who exemplifies the love of serving our community like she did. Leaders in Otsego Rotary, TOP (Together Otsego Prospers) and the Chamber decide the winner. City Manger Aaron Mitchell said that when Guthrie’s name was brought up to the group, it was unanimous. “Not only due to the service she does every day at OPS, but Julie’s efforts in feeding kids throughout the summer along with her efforts in creating and directing the two summer family programs are beyond commendable,” Mitchell said. Guthrie organizes the free meal programs and Wednesday fun events at the park in the summer. She also helped facilitate the city’s creation of the Tuesday evening events at the pavilion where OPS serves free dinners to kids.

“I love to do the summer events because it gives us the chance to connect with families,” Guthrie says. “It opens relationships and closes a gap between the school district and the families. It motivates me to bring some fun and activity for our families. The smiles on their faces when they see an amazing magic trick, learn a dinosaur fact, see a farm animal or help at the Bulldogs Beautify event make my day.  We have a great community and it is just a great way to connect,” she says.

“This is a very deserving recognition for Julie as she is always putting students, families, and community first,” says Jeff Haase, Otsego Superintendent. “She is always looking for ways to assist families in our school district and community and we are extremely fortunate to have her as part of our team.”

In addition to school-based activities, Guthrie volunteers her time at the Christian Neighbors Educational Resource Center to help others learn how to cook, “and in turn save money by preparing their own food instead of having to eat out or possibly not eat at all,” Mitchell adds.

Guthrie is honored to receive this award but credits those around her for making these programs such a success. “ I have the best support system.  Between the school, my food service staff,  the City of Otsego and DPW and the local businesses, I always have someone willing to help,” she says.
