It’s official, the All-American, All-State swimmer will head south post graduation to continue the sport he’s been dedicated to for the last 12 years. Liam Smith signed his letter of intent for the University of Florida. “It feels great that I get to continue doing what I love for even longer,” he says.

Smith is the best swimmer to come through Otsego and has his sights set on even more accomplishments. He competes for a USA team and has been inching toward Olympic qualifying times. He says choosing Florida was an easy choice, he felt like they could get him where he wants to go. “I am looking forward to competing against the highest level of athletes and learning from some of the best coaches in the world.”

He will compete in the Butterfly and Individual Medley (IM) in Gainsville, the two races he’s found the most success in at Otsego as well. He is a five-time state champion, three times for the 100 Butterfly, twice for the IM; he is a four-time All-American, two times for each of those events. He’s also a team captain.

Despite his biggest success coming from individual events, his most memorable moments in high school are any of the relays at State, “Competing with my close friends and seeing hard work pay off” is a highlight.
